Frida Kahlo, The Two Fridas, 1939
Painted after she divorced Diego Rivera, this heartbreaking work shows how Frida felt separated from herself. One of the “two Fridas” is clothed in traditional Mexican garb, while the other is in a colonial white dress. Their hearts are connected, but the flow is stopped by the Frida in the white dress with a pair of cold scissors. the “Mexican” Frida cannot nurture her other half.
Side note, this painting is fucking huge. I’ve seen it. Standing in front of it, it totally overpowers you with its feeling and colors. Almost too much to handle.
